sbm post

Sitting, talking, crowd controlling, anger management and monitoring. Mao ni ang buhay SBM SV sa enrollment. Very tiring but very fulfilling! Well, for the mean time, I could really say its ok because 1st year sagara pa man… wait till the upper-classmen na ang mag pa-enroll… it won’t just be crisis management ( crowd control plus nepotism mechanism) but we really have to quell a revolution if we do not get the enrollment efficient enough to accommodate their raging emotions. Bottom line: this is all in the day’s work. It is again nice to work not for myself anymore but for something bigger than myself.
Lesson learned: Always smile no matter what
AMDG
To SBM Family: I met plenty of interesting and friendly SBMSsc veterans kanina. Thank you for making me feel welcome. Honest.
To jaysan: Way kurat! Hagkap kayo imong aura… no worries… thank you gyud. Keep on smiling!

Ogilvie kumustahay 06'

Salamat kang Yani for the pic
News Bits: The 1st ever Ogilvie kumustahay was held last Oct. 26, 2006! It was a blast, even though the turn-out was less than half of the class. We were about 21 or something at least naa ang mga balik-CDO like Cathie, Chieney and Michael. Aniwei, the organizing committee came to the place 3 hours earlier to prepare the decoration and stuff. Grabe c ed. He prepared the labels and detials ( registration ekek and a program sheet). Nagpalit pa ug pink and white baloons. The party started around 4:30 pm. Nag kumustahay dayun after... a parang formal thing of updating each other... then Games dayun!!! Bibo kaayo ang games... naay cheering (pagka-immoral gamay), patola ekek (pagka-immoral gamay) and mga classic pinoy games... Bibo gyud. Nag disco2x pud... After that, DINNER!!! they served grilled chicken and pork. Then an unexpected song number by Ed and Kating! Bibo... The activity ending was the Truth or dare using the patola as the bottle... unique noh. Oh yea! nag watch pud me ug cute cartoon called the 3 happy friends on Ken's laptop...Very cute characters aside from the fact that they brutally murder and mutilate each other. It was fun! Hehehe. Pagkatapos, grabe ang ulan! down pour gyud. What a nice day being together agian with people i grew up with in high school.

oct. 25, 2006

Oi! Pinaka sayo nako na mata! i woke up around 6:30 am for my morning agenda: move my shift papers (ArtScies to SBM). To my disappointment, ugma pa e hatag ang permit to shift! sO ugma na gyud ma lihok. Protocol: Fill permit to shift and approve ekek...then proceed to the Pacts for processing...then SBM... mao ra.
In the afternoon, i attended my 1st SBMsc Meeting (enrollment procedure)with ed being a new SBMsc SV. Congratz ed!. The meeting was all about crowd control and procedural flows for the enrollment. Take note; i not yet enrolled sa SBM pero SBM SV nako! wierd! After that, i made uban ni mikel sa ketkai cz gusto cya magpauban (logical noh hahaha). I became a fashion consultant for about 30 min (hahaha, never happened b4) cz gapangita sa mikel ug sanina for a debut. With mikel natural creative talents, naka decide then cya in what to buy. Oh ye, the ogilvie band went to weng's place to decorate things cz ugma na ang OGILVIE KUMUSTAHAY 2006!

Weekly Review

10 days into sembreak! The week was nothing but significant fun and work! Plenty of things happened ranging from a beach escapade (actually, Chali Beach located at the Industrial suburbs of the city) to an interview, to a Jomi reunion!

SBM-SC interview (Tuesday). The day after the Chali escapade, I woke up looking like a walking over-cooked beefsteak then at around 12 noon I was informed by Dao (A nice and very tall SBM SV guy who recruited me for the SBM-SC) that I will have an interview around 2pm. What the heck, I have to face the top executive panel of the council looking like charcoal. The interview went well. They asked questions like, why I want to join, what are my skills, work ethics. They gave me situational analysis about a hellish workplace etc. Bottom line: I really want to render my service for the council because it’s already part of my nature working for something which is greater than myself like a student org. I guess I did well… Jsan (SBM Pres) will inform me if I pass. After the interview, I had an interesting and long interaction with Rupert (1st year chairman) which lasted for 4 hours! I went home around 7:30pm…

Weng and Maki House Party! ( Wednesday) Maki and Weng went to the house to download and copy a couple of music for their Ipods. It turned out to be a dancing party! Weng, Maki and I danced the “Beep” and several other hot music. Of course, with Louin’s natural talent in the dance floor, we were just blown away by his erotic, ehhemmm… I mean exotic dance moves. What a good way to socialize, at the same time, burn fat! Hahahaha. The “party” ended around 8pm.

SIMS Day ( Thursday) Another character entered the house around 3 pm. The Queen of all queens… Rexa! Her agenda; to play Sims all day long. She played, I watched but she had a hard time practicing her fingers to avoid touching the power button which automatically shuts down the computer. At the end of the day, she played well, giving Rexa (her Sim Character) a decent Disco house. When Rexa was about to leave the house, a dead drunk man laid on the pavement just beside our door! Nakakatatakot! Sa pikas door na lng cyan gi agi.

Jomi Reunion (Friday) Jomi is back! Jomi brought lots of gifts and news about the big world in Ateneo. Flash news: He was the block crush in his English Class! We went to SM (to eat) and the High school to check around and plan for the Ogilvie Kumustahay 2006. At first, I thought it was libre by jomi! Ngee! KKB man diay! Nakauli ko ahat! Maygani naa pa mi XU ato na time. Anyway, we went sniffing around the HS and I manage to go home bringing a copy of the OSASI Five-Year Development Plan Matrix.
the end

Thought of the week: Only passion, great passion, can elevate the human soul to achieve great things...

managers and leaders

Managers administer, leaders innovate
Managers ask how and when, leaders ask what and why
Managers focus on systems, leaders focus on people
Managers do things right, leaders do the right things
Managers maintain, leaders develop
Managers rely on control, leaders inspire trust
Managers have a short-term perspective, leaders have a longer-term perspective
Managers accept the status-quo, leaders challenge the status-quo
Managers have an eye on the bottom line, leaders have an eye on the horizon
Managers imitate, leaders originate
Managers emulate the classic good soldier, leaders are their own person
Managers copy, leaders show originality

Oh yeah! later that day, becky and i formed the "Amo association of naay uwagan na yaya" cz beki's yaya made tanan with a security guard parallel to our yaya who made tanan with a kargador sa Didi's toys. S H I F T (part two)

after spending 8 hours in my family farm ( Kinawe Libona, Bukidnon ), it resulted to another reflection session while facing the mighty mountains of Bukidnon against the strong mountain breeze. Kataw! Sembreak is not just a break for me but it is a transition of thoughts cz im shifting next sem. I'm shifting courses and i keep on repeating this cz its a Big decision that will alter my life! It needs the recollecting the past in order to understand your future while acting now. The list below are the things i picked up in the past that somehow link to my shift to the school of business and management...

Office supplies. Wow! i can still remember that whenever i go to the bookstore as a kid, i would always go to the office supplies. i don't know why but i was fond on looking at paperclips, pens, calendars... wierdo!
Management books section. since i considered national bookstore as a library, i will always proceed to this section of the store. i love scanning at books about how to's... 10 things... manage people...
i even bought a book about team building when i was in 4th year.
The Apprentice. Your're fired! i love that show... i would really sleep late when i was in 3rd year just to watch it and i watched the whole season. Ambot! gakalingaw gyud ko...
Capitalsim II. This is a business simulation game (from retail, stocks, manufacturing, farming, minig, logging). I love this game! i first discovered it in the internet when i was in 2nd year. i then searched all cd stores in cdo. Wala gyud koy nakita! Then that summer, we went to manila. I went to Vera Mall in San Juan just to scan for that CD! Martyr?! and i found it! I love playing it since.
LC Chairmanship. One thing i really enjoyed in this heavy responsibility of being the chairman of Xavier University High School is dealing with ideas, protocols, communication systems, plans, principles, people, resources, programs, implementation, evaluation and organizational structures.... i just love doing it!
Grade School Business. Believe it or not, i sold cheese stick (manufactured by ma'am aunt) when i was in grade 6 (also 1st, 2nd and 3rd year high school ). A class-based business, i really had a hang of it cz i went to the extent at extending my market to other sections! to the extent of creating a demand monitoring system called the "Cheese Stick Composite INdex)!!! hala oi, kataw gyud! i earned naman sad.

LESSON: So my message to those who will shift: Understand yourself, recollect and decide. (pasalamat lng ko na supportive ako parents:-)

oct. 14, 2006

special day! why? because i witnessed so as vicky, melmel, ed, weng, gellie and katlin (also some Robinson's staff) a rare thing. Ray gave celeste a bouquet of flowers worth millions in the 2nd floor of Limketkai Mall after 5 minutes of spontaneous hide and go seek with celeste and ray! Here is the story: The original plan: the original plan was to surprise cese with flowers given by ray at the center of the mall but sale man so occupied. Sa 2nd floor na lng. The 2nd plan: The 2nd plan was to cover her eyes and ray would just appear with the flowers. What really happened: It turned out to be a very intelligent and ingenious 1-second shift of protocol. Ray hid on a utility door rather than facing her directly. I covered cese's eyes and led her to the door believing that there was a dress that is perfect for her (melmel was the dress consultant) which took about 3 min due to disturbances of communication. When she opened her eyes, ray immerged bearing the flowers and gosh... it was a site to see. Two human beings having mutual care expressed it in a level which is not quite common in a CDO mall. Ray gave the flowers and cese was surprised with tears! The task was a success... Another day's work. By the way b4 this happened, we watched Breed... a suspense about crazy, blood-thirsty and very intelligent pack of dogs who love eating people. That's all

LESSON: Love is magical. Planned tasks can change in the last minute when its about emotions. Mingaw and Ketkai 2nd floor. It pays to be innovative, big time!

Thought of the day: People and rubber bands have one thing in common: they must be stretched to be effective. Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

project management (by: F. John Reh)

You could use this is any college project...
Define the ScopeThe first, and most important, step in any project is defining the scope of the project. What is it you are supposed to accomplish by managing this project? What is the project objective? Equally important is defining what is not included in the scope of your project. If you don't get enough definition from your boss, clarify the scope yourself and send it back upstairs for confirmation.
Determine Available Resources What people, equipment, and money will you have available to you to achieve the project objectives? As a project manager, you usually will not have direct control of these resources, but will have to manage them through
matrix management. Find out how easy or difficult that will be to do.
Check the Timeline When does the project have to be completed? As you develop your project plan you may have some flexibility in how you use time during the project, but deadlines usually are fixed. If you decide to use overtime hours to meet the schedule, you must weigh that against the limitations of your budget.
Assemble Your Project Team Get the people on your team together and start a dialog. They are the technical experts. That's why their functional supervisor assigned them to the project. Your job is to manage the team.
List the Big Steps What are the major pieces of the project? If you don't know, start by asking your team. It is a good idea to list the steps in chronological order but don't obsess about it; you can always change the order later.
List the Smaller Steps List the smaller steps in each of the larger steps. Again, it usually helps you remember all the steps if you list them in chronological order. How many levels deep you go of more and more detailed steps depends on the size and complexity of your project.
Develop a Preliminary PlanAssemble all your steps into a plan. What happens first? What is the next step? Which steps can go on at the same time with different resources? Who is going to do each step? How long will it take? There are many excellent software packages available that can automate a lot of this detail for you. Ask others in similar positions what they use.
Create Your Baseline Plan Get feedback on your preliminary plan from your team and from any other stakeholders. Adjust your timelines and work schedules to fit the project into the available time. Make any necessary adjustments to the preliminary plan to produce a baseline plan.
Request Project Adjustments There is almost never enough time, money or talent assigned to a project. Your job is to do more with the limited resources than people expect. However, there are often limits placed on a project that are simply unrealistic. You need to make your case and present it to your boss and request these unrealistic limits be changed. Ask for the changes at the beginning of the project. Don't wait until it's in trouble to ask for the changes you need.
Work Your Plan, But Don't Die For It Making the plan is important, but the plan can be changed. You have a plan for driving to work every morning. If one intersection is blocked by an accident, you change your plan and go a different way. Do the same with your project plans. Change them as needed, but always keep the scope and resources in mind.
Monitor Your Team's Progress You will make little progress at the beginning of the project, but start then to monitor what everyone is doing anyway. That will make it easier to catch issues before they become problems.
Document Everything Keep records. Every time you change from your baseline plan, write down what the change was and why it was necessary. Every time a new requirement is added to the project write down where the requirement came from and how the timeline or budget was adjusted because of it. You can't remember everything, so write them down so you'll be able to look them up at the end-of-project review and learn from them.
Keep Everyone Informed Keep all the project stakeholders informed of progress all along. Let them know of your success as you complete each milestone, but also inform them of problems as soon as they come up. Also keep you team informed. If changes are being considered, tell the team about them as far ahead as you can. Make sure everyone on the team is aware of what everyone else is doing.

College Life Hierarchy of needs

Physiological needs: The physiological needs of the organism, those enabling homeostasis, take first precedence. We need to breath, eat, sleep, drink, dispose and regulate body temperature. Duh! The canteen is located in the first floor of the commerce building. Comfort rooms are located almost in every building. Just look at the signs. Aside from research, the library is a good place to take a short nap.
Safety needs: Aside from the literal security officers in campus; security in terms of your course is a need in college. If you feel secured about your course; good for you because we really really need that. Aside from the course, we also need moral security. So we need to plant and let our morals and principles take root in order to be secured about our character.
Love and belongingness: After satisfying bodily and security needs, we move up to the love and belongingness. The next level is social. We need friendship, peer groups and family. This is where block mates and old friends come in. Nurture them in order to move up to the next need.
Status (esteem):
We need to be respected, to self-respect and to respect others. People need to engage themselves in order to gain recognition and have an activity or activities that give the person a sense of contribution and self-value, be it in a college career ( joining orgz) or hobbies. This is where the need to join human organizations comes in. Be active in your schools and organizations because these will help you grow. Self-Actualization: Self-actualization (a term originated by Kurt Goldstein) is the instinctual need of humans to make the most of their unique abilities and to strive to be the best they can be.

The college life hierarchy of needs is an assessment tool. We better reflect and ponder upon our human needs in order to live a full life.

Time Management

I came along with an article written by Stephen Covey, a management consultant. He created a time management mechanism that seems very helpful in our college life. He divided it with generations for us to integrate.

1st Generation: Reminders
This is the basic time management tool. Post-it notes, homework logs and cell phone reminders are excellent tools in reminding us tasks. This is sometimes referred to as the “check list”.
2nd Generation: Planning and Preparation
As we are reminded, we ought to be reminded by the detail. This generation deals with preparing a task like taking notes of what, where and when the task is needed. It also deals with setting goals.
3rd Generation: Prioritizing, Controlling and Planning
This generation deals with our values and priorities. We ought to list things in proper order basing on their urgency.

The mechanism is here so implement! Be efficient. Just do it!

Maximizing yourself

What’s one thing that can make us happy? It is making sure that all the things we do are coming from the best of our abilities and capabilities. As Aristotle said; “Man can only achieve happiness if he uses all his capabilities and abilities”. So here are some tips in applying this immortal principle in College or high school life. Dance if you want to dance even though you can’t dance. You’ll slowly learn and be more confident. (Dancing can actually be linked with confidence and confidence can be liked with better grades.) Answer questions with depth and essence using your critical thinking ability which will help your mind exercise. (‘’,). Read as if you are in the story using your deepest, most creative imaginative way of thinking thus help mold your idealism and creativity. Study with focus, understanding and eagerness because this after all is our purpose as students. In student orgs, work the best with what you have because being an active part of something bigger than ourselves such as orgz is one factor of college life fulfillment.

So how in the world will these things make me happy? Well, it enforces our being alive and working. It fuels our purpose. It gives us a feeling of fulfillment that we are living and giving the best of what we have.

Kung Ignatian Principle pa: Do everything with MAGIS. Human!
so JUST DO IT!
